January 15: National Strawberry Ice Cream
Day: -- An annual celebration of one of the choicest flavors of
ice cream! (All flavors of ice cream are recognized on July 1st).
Strawberry ice cream is made by blending either strawberries or
strawberry flavoring with eggs, cream, vanilla, and sugar. Food
coloring is often used to give it the pink or light red hue.
During James Madison's second inauguration in 1813, strawberry ice
cream was served. It's also one of the three flavors found in
Neapolitan ice cream along with vanilla and chocolate. In the lore
of UFOs, as recounted in such books as "Exempt from
Disclosure" by Robert M. Collins, it is said that aliens such
as J-Rod from the Zeta Reticuli system have a particular taste for
strawberry ice cream - which proves that this delicious treat is
out of this world! Other variations of strawberry ice cream
include strawberry cheesecake ice cream and strawberry ripple ice
cream. Holidays are best celebrated with someone else, so be sure
to grab a bowl or two. Invite someone to join you while you enjoy
a dish of strawberry ice cream. Strawberries tend to remind us of
summer, too, so imagine the things you'll do when the days are
warmer - and use #StrawberryIceCreamDay to post on social media!

January 15: National Hat Day: -- Get out
your favorite hat (we know, sometimes it can be really hard to
decide) and celebrate! Hats have been worn as uniforms, fashion
accessories, and protective gear. And did you know that they date
all the way back to before 3,300 BCE? That's right, that's older
than both your parents combined! Though there aren't any official
records of hats before 3,000 BCE, it is believed that they were
commonplace long before that. The 30,000 year old Venus of
Willendorf figurine may depict a woman wearing a woven hat. One of
the earliest known confirmed hats was worn by a bronze-aged man
nicknamed Otzi, whose body was found frozen in a mountain between
Austria and Italy, where he had been since around 3250 BCE. He was
discovered wearing a bearskin cap with a chinstrap made of several
hides stitched together, resembling a Russian fur hat. In the
Middle Ages, hats were a marker of social status and used to
single out certain groups. The 1215 Fourth Council of the Lateran
required that all Jewish people identify themselves by wearing the
"Judenhat", marking themselves as targets for
anti-Semitism. On the other hand, hats for women ranged from
simple scarves to elaborate hennin, and acted as a symbol of
social status. Structured hats for women similar to those of male
courtiers began to be worn in the late 16th century. In the first
half of the 19th century, women wore bonnets that gradually became
larger, decorated with ribbons, flowers, feathers, and gauze
trims. By the end of the century, many other styles were
introduced, such as hats with wide brims and flat crowns, the
flower pot and the toque. In the middle of the 1920s, when women
began to cut their hair short, they chose hats that hugged their
head like a helmet. These were the cloche hats, whose low brim
made it so women had to walk with their chins up, creating an air
of independence and self-reliance. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till

January 15> Alpha Kappa Alpha Day: --
Today celebrates the first black female sorority, which has the
honor of housing many great black women in the U.S. While it has
its competition, its members are quite exceptional. Did you know
that Kamala Harris - the first black woman to occupy the office of
Vice President in the U.S., is an A.K.A. sister? Well, don't you
think this sorority deserves a day to be celebrated? We absolutely
do! Every year since the early 20th century, January 15 has been
celebrated as Alpha Kappa Alpha Day. The history of the day's
celebration follows the history of the creation of the sorority.
For over a century, this day has been consecutively celebrated.
Created on January 15, 1908, at Howard University, A.K.A. was a
product of a black woman's dream of a support network where fellow
female black college students would find the necessary support
they needed to live and study successfully in a complex, unfair,
and racist college system. Ethel Hedgeman's search for liberation
for her fellow black college colleagues at Howard University
produced the first black female Greek-letter sorority. While other
female sororities existed before then, and many others sprang up
after, A.K.A. has a rich history that is quite unmatched by
others. On the one hand, it was the first sorority that black
female college students around the U.S. related to. On the other
hand, it holds a record-breaking history. It presently has an
approximate membership of over 300,000 across the U.S. and other
countries. Some of the many notable alumni of A.K.A. include the
famous black poet - Maya Angelou, who in 1969, published "I
Know Why the Caged Bird Sings;" Coretta Scott-King, the wife
of the 20th-century activist Martin Luther King Jr.; Katherine G.
Johnson, Phylicia Rashad, Rosa Parks, and many others. In 2021,
A.K.A. became the only female Greek-letter sorority to produce a
Vice President. Kamala Harris holds the position of the only woman
to occupy the second-highest seat possible in the White House.
These and many other achievements from the sisters of A.K.A. make
the sorority widely acknowledged, not only in the U.S. but also in
South Africa, Canada, Japan, Germany, South Korea, the United Arab
Emirates, Liberia, Nigeria, and others. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount

January 15, 1535: The History Of
Christianity: The Reformation (The Protestant Reformation, The
European Reformation): Acts Of Supremacy: The First Act Of
Supremacy: The English Reformation: -- Henry VIII issues a decree
making him Supreme Head Of The Church Of England, following on the
1534 Act Of Supremacy that had replaced the pope with King Henry
VIII and his successors as the head of the Christian church in
England. His decree announced to his subjects that he was "the
only supreme head on earth of the Church of England" and that
the English crown shall enjoy "all honours, dignities,
preeminences, jurisdictions, privileges, authorities, immunities,
profits, and commodities to the said dignity." This event
itself marked the beginning of the English Reformation and was to
be followed soon after by the Dissolution of the Monasteries,
between 1536 and 1541, by which Henry disbanded monasteries,
priories, convents and friaries in England, Wales and Ireland. The
reasons for the act - and the subsequent execution of those who
opposed him - were both personal and overtly political. Foremost
was Henry's desire to abandon Rome, and to reject Catholic
church's opposition to his proposed divorce from Catherine Of
Aragon. His then wife had failed to produce a son and heir and
Henry had also fallen under the charms of Anne Boleyn, believing
Catherine's inability to provide a male heir as a sign that the
marriage was 'blighted in the eyes of God'. The Act Of Supremacy
came into being following Pope Clement VII's refusal to grant
Henry VIII an annulment. The pope was fearful of the reaction of
Catherine's nephew, Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, who sacked Rome
in 1527 and the pope wanted to avoid clashing with him. Henry
therefore seized his chance to wrest power away from Rome and into
his own hands, taking property of the monasteries and exploiting
his right to rule the Church of England, which saw him
excommunicated by the Catholic church. It was a remarkable change
of attitude for someone who had been declared "Defender of
the Faith" as recently as 1521 by Pope Leo X for his The
Defence of the Seven Sacraments, which accused Protestant reformer
Martin Luther of heresy - a title that Parliament would later
again confer upon the king in 1544. To ensure the stability of The
Supremacy Act, The Treasons Act was passed in 1534 which
stipulated that to disavow the Act Of Supremacy and to deprive the
King of his "dignity, title, or name" was treason. One
of the most famous people to suffer the consequences of this was
Sir Thomas More, Henry's Lord Chancellor, who paid for his refusal
to outwardly support he king's marriage to Anne Boleyn with his
life in 1535. He was sentenced to death in front of a jury which
consisted of many of Anne's relatives. Today, this same
legislation is the legal authority of the Sovereign of the United
Kingdom over the Church of England. While Henry's Act Of Supremacy
was repealed in 1554 by his Catholic daughter, Queen Mary I, it
was reinstated by Mary's Protestant half-sister, Queen Elizabeth
I, when she ascended to the throne. Elizabeth declared herself
Supreme Governor of the Church of England, and introduced an Oath
of Supremacy, requiring anyone taking public or church office to
swear allegiance to the monarch as head of the church. This Second
Act Of Supremacy in 1558 established once and for all the Anglican
Church's presence in England which has endured for almost five
centuries. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight PT!

January 15, 1759: Grand Openings: Museum
Grand Openings: -- The British Museum opens. Located in the
Bloomsbury area of London, United Kingdom, it is a public
institution dedicated to human history, art and culture. Its
permanent collection, numbering some 8 million works, is among the
largest and most comprehensive in existence and originates from
all continents, illustrating and documenting the story of human
culture from its beginnings to the present. The British Museum was
established in 1753, largely based on the collections of the
physician and scientist Sir Hans Sloane. The museum first opened
to the public on 15 January 1759, in Montagu House, on the site of
the current building. Its expansion over the following two and a
half centuries was largely a result of expanding British
colonization and has resulted in the creation of several branch
institutions, the first being the British Museum of Natural
History in South Kensington in 1881 (it is nowadays simply called
the Natural History Museum, and is separate and independent). In
1973, the British Library Act 1972 detached the library department
from the British Museum, but it continued to host the now
separated British Library in the same Reading Room and building as
the museum until 1997. The museum is a non-departmental public
body sponsored by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and
Sport, and as with all other national museums in the United
Kingdom it charges no admission fee, except for loan exhibitions.

The Second Battle of Fort Fisher was a successful assault by the
Union Army, Navy and Marine Corps against Fort Fisher, south of
Wilmington, North Carolina, near the end of the American Civil War
during January 13-15, 1865. Sometimes referred to as the
"Gibraltar of the South" and the last major coastal
stronghold of the Confederacy, Fort Fisher had tremendous
strategic value during the war, providing a port for blockade
runners supplying the Army of Northern Virginia. Major General
Alfred Terry led the Union Army attack, and he sent one division

January 15, 1908: #BOTD: Edward Teller,
Hungarian-American physicist and academic, known colloquially as
"the father of the hydrogen bomb" (although he claimed
not to care for that title), who made numerous contributions to
nuclear and molecular physics before, during and after The
Manhattan Project, spectroscopy (in particular the Jahn-Teller and
Renner-Teller effects), and surface physics (d. September 9, 2003)
is #born Teller Ede in into a Jewish family in Budapest,
Austria-Hungary. His parents were Ilona (nee Deutsch), a pianist,
and Max Teller, an attorney. He attended the Minta Gymnasium in
Budapest. Despite being of Jewish origins, Teller became agnostic.
"Religion was not an issue in my family", he later
wrote, "indeed, it was never discussed. My only religious
training came because the Minta required that all students take
classes in their respective religions. My family celebrated one
holiday, the Day of Atonement, when we all fasted. Yet my father
said prayers for his parents on Saturdays and on all the Jewish
holidays. The idea of God that I absorbed was that it would be
wonderful if He existed: We needed Him desperately but had not
seen Him in many thousands of years." Teller was a late
talker, but he became very interested in numbers and for fun
calculated large numbers in his head. Teller left Hungary for
Germany in 1926, partly due to the discriminatory numerus clausus
rule under Miklos Horthy's regime. The political climate and
revolutions in Hungary during his youth instilled a lingering
animosity toward Communism and Fascism. After he began to face the
same problems in Nazi Germany, Teller emigrated to the United
States in the 1930s. Teller was an early member of the Manhattan
Project, charged with developing the first atomic bomb. During
this time he made a serious push to develop the first fusion-based
weapons as well, but these were deferred until after World War II.
After his controversial testimony in the security clearance
hearing of his former Los Alamos Laboratory superior J. Robert
Oppenheimer, Teller was ostracized by much of the scientific
community. He continued to find support from the U.S. government
and military research establishment, particularly for his advocacy
for nuclear energy development, a strong nuclear arsenal, and a
vigorous nuclear testing program. He was a co-founder of Lawrence
Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), and was both its director
and associate director for many years. In his later years, Teller
became especially known for his advocacy of controversial
technological solutions to both military and civilian problems,
including a plan to excavate an artificial harbor in Alaska using
thermonuclear explosive in what was called Project Chariot. He was
a vigorous advocate of Ronald Reagan's Strategic Defense
Initiative. Throughout his life, Teller was known both for his
scientific ability and his difficult interpersonal relations and
volatile personality, and is considered one of the inspirations
for the character Dr. Strangelove in the 1964 movie of the same
name. Edward Teller died in Stanford, California at the age of 95,
following a stroke suffered two days prior and having long
experienced a number of conditions related to his advanced age.

( #JCKaelin here: My mother's mother
Helen was, according to herself and family gossip, Gene Krupa's
girlfriend for a brief time during an unspecified time frame.
Krupa was married to Ethel Maguire twice (1934 to 1942, 1946 till
her death in 1955). There were supposed to have been family photos
of my grandmother and Krupa together during their supposed
relationship, but those photos are, to the best of my knowledge,
no longer extant. My mother was born in May 1940, which birth
would have been during the time of Gene's marriage. Despite this,
there was some repressed gossip that my mother was in fact Krupa's
illegitimate child, despite the fact that Jazz historian Phil
Schaap, a friend of Gene Krupa, asserted both that Krupa chose to
be a virgin before he was married, and that he maintained chastity
outside of marriage, as was common among many Catholics of that
era. It was not until 23AndMe that we had DNA proof that he was,
in fact, not my ancestor, despite the fact that both his family
and my mothers' were of pronounced French Canadian stock, and
there was a strong physical resemblance of my mother and Krupa.
For a time, though, it was cool for me to think that I was the
grandson, "legitimate" or no, of the godfather of the
west's modern era of drumming and "the founding father of
modern drumset" :) ) ========= January 15, 1909: #BOTD: #HBD!
Gene Krupa, American jazz and big band drummer, band leader,
actor, and composer, considered "the founding father of
modern drumset" by Modern Drummer magazine (d. October 16,
1973) is #born Eugene Bertram Krupa in in Chicago, Illinois. Known
for his highly energetic, flamboyant style and for his
showmanship, Krupa importance for his musical contributions to
jazz music and his influence on popular drumming and dance music
extends to this day. His drum solo on "Sing, Sing, Sing"
(1937) elevated the role of the drummer as a frequently used solo
voice in the band, making him one of the first major percussive
soloists. Among his most important and endure contributions is the
defining of the standard drum kit and the playing techniques to
utilize them used throughout the world today (bass drum, floor
toms-toms, snare drum, high-hat cymbals and the ride cymbal, crash
cymbal and splash cymbal), a standardization he made in
collaboration with drum brand Slingerland and cybal brand
Zildjian. Gene Krupa died in Yonkers, New York at the age 64 from
heart failure, though he also had leukemia and emphysema. He is

President of Egypt from 1956 until his death , and holocaust
denier (d. September 28, 1970) is #born Gamal Abdel Nasser Hussein
in Bakos, Alexandria, Egypt. Nasser was the second President of
Egypt, serving from 1956 until his death. Nasser led the 1952
overthrow of the monarchy and introduced far-reaching land reforms
the following year. Following a 1954 attempt on his life by a
Muslim Brotherhood member, he cracked down on the organization,
put President Muhammad Naguib under house arrest, and assumed
executive office, officially becoming president in June 1956.
Nasser's popularity in Egypt and the Arab world skyrocketed after
his nationalization of the Suez Canal and his political victory in
the subsequent Suez Crisis. Calls for pan-Arab unity under his
leadership increased, culminating with the formation of the United
Arab Republic with Syria (1958-1961). In 1962, Nasser began a
series of major socialist measures and modernization reforms in
Egypt. Despite setbacks to his pan-Arabist cause, by 1963 Nasser's
supporters gained power in several Arab countries, but he became
embroiled in the North Yemen Civil War. He began his second
presidential term in March 1965 after his political opponents were
banned from running. Following Egypt's defeat by Israel in the
1967 Six-Day War, Nasser resigned, but he returned to office after
popular demonstrations called for his reinstatement. By 1968,
Nasser had appointed himself prime minister, launched the War of
Attrition to regain lost territory, began a process of
depoliticizing the military, and issued a set of political
liberalization reforms. Gamal Abdel Nasser died at 6 PM of a heart
attack in Cairo, mere hours after escorting the last Arab leader
to leave The Arab League Summit Of 1970. Following the
announcement of Nasser's death, most Arabs were in a state of
shock. Nasser's funeral procession through Cairo on October 1 was
attended by at least five million mourners. The 10-kilometer (6.2
mi) procession to his burial site began at the old Revolutionary
Command Council (RCC) headquarters with a flyover by MiG-21 jets.
His flag-draped coffin was attached to a gun carriage pulled by
six horses and led by a column of cavalrymen. All Arab heads of
state attended, with the exception of Saudi King Faisal. King
Hussein and Arafat cried openly, and Muammar Gaddafi of Libya
fainted from emotional distress twice. A few major non-Arab
dignitaries were present, including Soviet Premier Alexei Kosygin
and French Prime Minister Jacques Chaban-Delmas. Anwar Sadat is
named as Nasser' temporary successor, and will later become the
permanent successor. He is buried in the mausoleum of The Gamal
Abdel Nasser Mosque in Cairo, Egypt. Nasser remains an iconic
figure in the Arab world, particularly for his strides towards
social justice and Arab unity, modernization policies, and
anti-imperialist efforts. His presidency also encouraged and
coincided with an Egyptian cultural boom, and launched large
industrial projects, including the Aswan Dam and Helwan City.
Nasser's detractors criticize his authoritarianism, his human
rights violations and his dominance of military over civil
institutions, establishing a pattern of military and dictatorial
rule in Egypt. #GamalAbdelNasser #EgyptianHistory

January 15, 1924: #BOTD: Vladimir
Semichastny, Soviet politician, Chairman of the KGB from November
1961 to May 1967 (d. January 12, 2001) is #born Vladimir
Yefimovich Semichastny in the village of Hryhorivka, near Grishino
(today Pokrovsk), in the Donetsk Oblast (later renamed Stalino
Oblast) of what was then Soviet Ukraine to a working-class Russian
family originally from Tula Province in European Russia. He was a
protege of Chairman of the KGB Alexander Shelepin, and he rose
through the ranks of the Communist Youth League (Komsomol).
Semichastny was surprised when Khrushchev informed him of his
appointment as KGB Chairman, commenting that he did not have any
experience in intelligence and counterintelligence; Khrushchev,
however, told him that the KGB needed, above all, a deft political
hand. Semichastny's first decision as KGB Chairman, on November
22, 1961, (after nine days in office) was to approve the creation
of a "sabotage and terrorism" group (as the KGB itself
called it) within the Sandinista National Liberation Front in
Nicaragua; the Sandinistas would eventually manage to seize power
in that country in 1979. During the Cuban Missile Crisis,
Semichastny was responsible for coordinating all information
received from abroad. His chosen crisis team oversaw intelligence
from the Foreign Ministry, the GRU (Military Intelligence) and, of
course, the KGB. The team met every day in his office at KGB
Headquarters in Lubyanka Square. During his tenure Semichasnty
attempted to create a new, more positive public image for the KGB,
permitting an article to appear in the newspaper Izvestia that
included an interview with an unnamed "senior KGB officer"
(himself); he stated "many young Communist Party and
Communist Youth League workers have joined the KGB, and none of
the people who, during the time of Joseph Stalin's cult of
personality, took part in the repressions against innocent Soviet
people, is now in the Service." More articles, books and
films on the security organs appeared, and Soviet spies became
heroes in print and cinema - Rudolf Abel, Gordon Lonsdale, Harold
(Kim) Philby, and Richard Sorge. Semichastny and his mentor
Shelepin participated in the successful coup against Khrushchev in
October 1964, an act that undoubtedly led to his being initially
retained as KGB chief by the new, more hard-line Soviet
leadership. There are some indications that Leonid Brezhnev, who
led the coup against Khrushchev, wanted to assassinate him, but
Semichastny, while participating in the ouster of Khrushchev,
categorically refused to allow any bloodshed. Semichastny was in
fact the one who informed Khrushchev of his removal from power,
"by order of the Politburo"; as Khrushchev was returning
to Moscow from a holiday at the Black Sea, Semichastny waited for
him at the airport flanked by KGB security guards, informed him of
his ouster and told him not to resist. Khrushchev did not resist,
and the hardliners' coup went off smoothly; Khrushchev felt
betrayed by Semichastny, as he considered him a friend and ally
until that very moment, not suspecting that he had joined his
enemies within the Party. In March 1967, Stalin's daughter,
Svetlana Alliluyeva, defected to the USA - an embarrassment for
the Soviet Union, but not a security threat of any kind, yet
Semichastny ordered the KGB to kidnap her and bring her back. The
attempt failed, and led to the exposure of several KGB agents, who
were arrested. The blunder gave Shelepin's enemies a pretext to
sack Semichastny. Shelepin was able to protect him for a few
weeks. but in May, he was hospitalised for eight days after an
operation, and in his absence, on May 18 1967, the Politburo held
a ten-minute discussion in which they decided to appoint Yuri
Andropov, who was ten years older than Semichastny, as his
replacement. Shelepin was removed from positions of influence soon
afterwards. From 1967 until 1981 Semichastny was a Deputy Prime
Minister of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, although he
did not have any significant influence in the political affairs of
the Republic, which was tightly controlled by Brezhnevites. In
1981 he was removed from that position as well, and retired to
private life. After U.S. President John F. Kennedy was
assassinated in 1963, Semichastny investigated the background of
Lee Harvey Oswald, who was arrested for the murder and was himself
shot dead. Oswald had spent some time in the Soviet Union but,
according to Semichastny's investigations, had never worked for
any Soviet intelligence agency; Semichastny's verdict, that there
was definitely "something fishy" in the whole affair, is
shared by many. Markus Wolf, the intelligence chief of East
Germany (the STASI), who worked closely with Semichastny, said of
him "He was as kind and friendly as might be expected from a
former leader of the Komsomol, the party's youth wing. Though
affable, Semichastny was a sharp-minded, ideologically severe man.
Semichastny's personal obsession was the pollution of the system
from within by Soviet artists and writers; it was he who
masterminded the vilification of Boris Pasternak and his novel Dr.
Zhivago. He had little interest in foreign intelligence, which he
left to Aleksandr Sakharovsky, who was highly respected by many
members of his staff, as well as by me". Vladimir Semichastny
died in Moscow of a stroke at the age of 77. He is buried at
Troyekurovskoye Cemetery in Moscow. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount

Luther King Jr., American Baptist minister and activist, the most
visible spokesperson and leader in the civil rights movement (d.
April 4, 1968) is #born Michael King Jr. in Atlanta, Georgia. He
is best known for his role in the advancement of civil rights
using the tactics of nonviolence and civil disobedience based on
his Christian beliefs and inspired by the nonviolent activism of
Mahatma Gandhi. King became a civil rights activist early in his
career. He led the 1955 Montgomery bus boycott and helped found
the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) in 1957,
serving as its first president. With the SCLC, he led an
unsuccessful 1962 struggle against segregation in Albany, Georgia,
and helped organize the nonviolent 1963 protests in Birmingham,
Alabama. He also helped to organize the 1963 March On Washington,
where he delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech.
On October 14, 1964, King received the Nobel Peace Prize for
combating racial inequality through nonviolent resistance. In
1965, he helped to organize the Selma to Montgomery marches, and
the following year he and the SCLC took the movement north to
Chicago to work on segregated housing. In the final years of his
life, he expanded his focus to include opposition towards poverty
and the Vietnam War, alienating many of his liberal allies with a
1967 speech titled "Beyond Vietnam". In 1968, King was
planning a national occupation of Washington, D.C., to be called
the Poor People's Campaign, when he was assassinated by James Earl
Ray on April 4 in Memphis, Tennessee. He is buried at The Martin
Luther King Jr. National Historical Park in Atlanta, Georgia.
King's death was followed by riots in many U.S. cities. Ray, who
fled the country, was arrested two months later at London Heathrow
Airport. Ray was sentenced to 99 years in prison for King's
murder, and died in 1998 from hepatitis while serving his
sentence. King was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal Of
Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal. Martin Luther King Jr.
Day was established as a holiday in numerous cities and states
beginning in 1971, and as a U.S. federal holiday observed on the
third Monday of every January in 1986. Hundreds of streets in the
U.S. have been renamed in his honor, and a county in Washington
State was also rededicated for him. The Martin Luther King Jr.
Memorial on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. was dedicated in

January 15, 1941: #BOTD: #HBD! Captain
Beefheart (Don Van Vliet), American singer-songwriter, musician,
and artist (d. December 17, 2010) is #born Don Glen Vliet in
Glendale, California. Captain Beefheart conducted a rotating
ensemble called the Magic Band, with whom he recorded 13 studio
albums between 1964 and 1982. His music blended elements of blues,
free jazz, rock, and the avant-garde with idiosyncratic rhythms,
absurdist wordplay, and his wide vocal range. Known for his
enigmatic persona, Beefheart frequently constructed myths about
his life and was known to exercise an almost dictatorial control
over his supporting musicians. Although he achieved little
commercial success, he sustained a cult following as a "highly
significant" and "incalculable" influence on an
array of new wave, punk, and experimental rock artists. An
artistic prodigy in his childhood, Van Vliet developed an eclectic
musical taste during his teen years in Lancaster, California, and
formed "a mutually useful but volatile" friendship with
musician Frank Zappa, with whom he sporadically competed and
collaborated. He began performing with his Captain Beefheart
persona in 1964 and joined the original Magic Band line-up,
initiated by Alexis Snouffer, the same year. The group released
their debut album Safe as Milk in 1967 on Buddah Records. After
being dropped by two consecutive record labels they signed to
Zappa's Straight Records, where they released 1969's Trout Mask
Replica; the album would later rank 58th in Rolling Stone
magazine's 2003 list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. In
1974, frustrated by lack of commercial success, he pursued a more
conventional rock sound, but the ensuing albums were critically
panned; this move, combined with not having been paid for a
European tour, and years of enduring Beefheart's abusive behavior,
led the entire band to quit. Beefheart eventually formed a new
Magic Band with a group of younger musicians and regained critical
approval through three final albums: Shiny Beast (1978), Doc at
the Radar Station (1980) and Ice Cream for Crow (1982). Van Vliet
made few public appearances after his retirement from music in
1982. He pursued a career in art, an interest that originated in
his childhood talent for sculpture, and a venture which proved to
be his most financially secure. His expressionist paintings and
drawings command high prices, and have been exhibited in art
galleries and museums across the world. Van Vliet died on a Friday
at a hospital in Arcata, California of complications from multiple
sclerosis, from which he had for many years. Tom Waits and his
colloborator/wife Kathleen Brennan commented on his death,
praising him: "Wondrous, secret ... and profound, he was a
diviner of the highest order." Dweezil Zappa dedicated the
song "Willie the Pimp" to Beefheart at the "Zappa
Plays Zappa" show at the Beacon Theatre in New York City on
the day of his death, while Jeff Bridges exclaimed "Rest in
peace, Captain Beefheart!" at the conclusion of the December
18, 2010, episode of NBC's Saturday Night Live. He is buried at
Trinidad Lighthouse Lost & Buried at Sea Memorials in
Trinidad, California. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight PT!

January 15, 1943: Naval History: The
History Of The United States Navy: The New United States Navy (The
New Navy, The United States Navy 1885-Present): Naval Keel Layings
(Naval Laying Downs, Naval Layings Down): Submarines (Subs): USS
Tang (SS-306): USS Tang (SS-306), a Balao-class submarine of The
Second World War, considered one of the greatest submarines of all
time, the first ship of the United States Navy to bear the name
Tang, has her keel laid down. The contract to build USS Tang had
been awarded to Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo, California
northeast of San Francisco on December 15, 1941. She was launched
on August 17, 1943 sponsored by Mrs. Alix M. Pitre, wife of
Captain Antonio S. Pitre, Director of Research at the Mare Island
Naval Shipyard. She was commissioned on October 15, 1943 with
Lieutenant Commander Richard O'Kane, former executive officer of
the USS Wahoo (SS-238), in command, and would be delivered to the
Navy on November 30, 1943. In her short career in the Pacific War,
USS Tang sank 33 ships totalling 116,454 tons. Tang served until
being sunk during her final engagement by a circular run of her
final torpedo off the coast of China in the Taiwan Strait on
October 24, 1944, going down in 180 ft (55 m) of water. 78 men
were lost, and the 9 survivors were picked up by a Japanese
frigate and taken prisoner of war. This was the only known time
that a Momsen lung was used to escape a sunken submarine.
Commander Richard O'Kane received the Medal of Honor for her last
two engagements (October 23 and 24, 1944). The Balao Class
Submarine was a design of United States Navy submarine used during
World War II, and with 120 boats completed, the largest class of
submarines in the United States Navy. It was an improvement on the
earlier Gato Class, though the boats had slight internal
differences; both classes were considered to be the best long
range submarines of World War II. The most significant improvement
of the Balao Class was the use of thicker, higher yield strength
steel in the pressure hull skins and frames, which increased their
test depth to 400 feet (120 m). USS Tang actually achieved a depth
of 612 ft (187 m) during a test dive, and exceeded that test depth
when taking on water in the forward torpedo room while evading a
destroyer. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight PT!

January 15, 1961: The History Of Rock &
Roll: The History Of Motown: The History Of Girl Groups (The
History Of Gurl Groups): The Supremes: -- After months of
unsuccessful friendly persuasian and pressure put upon Motown's
Berry Gordy by local Detroit girl group "The Primettes",
Gordy at last signs them to his record label under a name
suggested to the group by Gordy and selected by Primette Florence
Ballard, "The Supremes", securing their destiny after a
long string of failures to become the greatest girl group of all
time with an even longer string of hits. Between 1961 and 1963,
the Supremes released six singles, however, none of those first
six singles charted in the Top 40 positions of the Billboard Hot
100. Jokingly referred to as the "no-hit Supremes"
around Motown's Hitsville U.S.A. offices, the group attempted to
compensate for their lack of hits by taking on any work available
at the studio, including providing hand claps and singing backup
for Motown artists such as Marvin Gaye and the Temptations. During
these years, all three members took turns singing lead: Wilson
favored soft ballads, Ballard favored soulful, hard-driving songs,
and Ross favored mainstream pop songs. Most of their early
material was written and produced by Berry Gordy or Smokey
Robinson. It was not until late 1963, when the Supremes began
recording the songs by Motown's songwriting and production team
Holland-Dozier-Holland, and became permanently fronted by Diana
Ross at the insistance of Gordy, that they began a long string of
hits, beginning with "Where Did Our Love Go". On Sale @

January 15: Indian Army Day: -- January
15, 1949: British General Francis Bucher hands over the reins of
the Indian army to Field Marshal Kodandera M. Cariappa, who
becomes thereby India's first field marshal. Thereafter, Indian
Army Day is observed on January 15 annually to recognize this
historic event. India has had military capabilities from the time
of the Indus Valley Civilization that flourished between 3300 B.C.
to 1300 B.C. Many succeeding dynasties during the time of
Alexander and beyond used their military strengths to fight wars
and expand their territory across the sub-continent. Some of the
most famous of these dynasties were Maurya, Satavahana, Gupta,
Vijayanagara, Chalukya, and Chola. These dynasties were followed
by a series of wars waged between central Asian armies, which the
Mughals, considered to originate from present-day Uzbekistan,
eventually won. They went on to establish their empire on the
sub-continent. When the East India Company was set up, the
territory was divided into presidencies, and each had its own army
unit. These were Madras, Calcutta, and Bombay. Independent,
regional kingdoms, like Mysore, were able to defeat the British
Army at war and hold on to their territory until the ruler of
Mysore, Tipu Sultan, was finally defeated in 1799. During the
First World War, one million Indians volunteered to fight in the
British Army and around 90,000 lost their lives. Similarly, almost
half of the officers in the battles fought during World War II
were Indian. As the Indian Independence movement gained traction
in 1946, the loyalties of Indian soldiers became conflicted. Many
mutinied against or resigned from the British-led army and navy
units. While the 'Indianization' of the armed forces under the
British continued well into the country's independence, the final
handover took place on January 15, 1949, and this is the day we
celebrate.

Conspiracies Special Narrated By Joe Frank MP4 Video Download DVD
Today, January 15, 2026
January 15, 2018: #DOTD: #RIP: Joe Frank,
French-born American writer, teacher, and radio performer best
known for his often philosophical, humorous, surrealist, and
sometimes absurd monologues and radio dramas he recorded often in
collaboration with friends, actors, and family members (b. August
19, 1938) #dies from sepsis after multiple reversals following
colon cancer surgery, aged 79. His burial details are not publicly
disclosed. In May 2014, Frank had surgery to treat the cancer,
which was successful. In December 2015, Frank was hospitalized due
to a gastrointestinal perforation following a routine medical
procedure. This led to heart and kidney issues and Frank's
complete recovery took a full year. His colon cancer returned in
July 2017; he had surgery in October 2017 to excise a tumor in his
colon; sepsis resulted, ultimately causing his death. Joe Frank
was born Joseph Langermann in Strasbourg, France, near the border
of Germany into the German-Polish Jewish family of Meier
Langermann, aged 51, and Friederike "Fritzi" Langermann
(nee Passweg), aged 26. Frank was born with club feet; of his
testicles, one was unusually small, and the other, undescended. A
childhood nanny would threaten him with enemas. A cast left one
leg permanently withered and his mother permanently ashamed. "She
did not even want to celebrate Mother's Day," Frank told
Slate magazine's Mark Oppenheimer, "because it was not a
happy day for her, having given birth to a child who was
deformed." When Frank was 20, he got testicular cancer in his
remaining, withered testicle, and was saved by a brutal regimen of
cobalt radiation. Frank was born months before the family fled
from Nazi Germany's persecution of Jewish people in their native
Poland. Legislation to allow the family and others into the
country was passed by the US Congress twice, the first having been
vetoed by President Roosevelt. His father died of kidney failure
in New York City when Joe was five years old. On April 28, 1945,
his mother married Theodore Frank (whom Joe called Freddy in his
show, and in the article 'Joe Frank is off the air' in the 'LA
Weekly' in 1997), which changed Joe's last name. In his twenties,
Frank studied at Hofstra University in New York and later at the
Iowa Writers' Workshop. In 1964, he taught five grades of English
at the Sands Point Academy for Gifted Children in Sands Point, New
York. From 1965 to 1975, he taught English and Russian literature
and philosophy at the Dalton School in Manhattan and later, while
working as a music promoter (1976-77), became interested in the
power of radio. In 1977, Frank started volunteering at Pacifica
Network station WBAI in New York, performing experimental radio
involving monologues, improvisational actors, and live music
during late-night, free-form hours. In 1978, he moved to
Washington, D.C., to serve as a co-anchor for the weekend edition
of National Public Radio's All Things Considered, his first paying
radio job, which lasted two weeks. At the end of each segment, he
was given five minutes to create and narrate his creative
fictional essays. In 1978-84, Joe performed in, and produced 18
dramas for NPR Playhouse, which won several awards. In 1986, at
the invitation of Ruth Hirschman Seymour, the general manager of
NPR's Santa Monica, California, affiliate KCRW, Frank moved to
Santa Monica, California, where he wrote, produced, and performed
in his own weekly hour-long radio program, Joe Frank: Work In
Progress. Frank continued to work at KCRW until 2002, and his work
evolved, as evidenced by the diverse series he produced. The first
was "Work in Progress," then "In The Dark,"
followed by "Somewhere Out There", and finally "The
Other Side". Beginning in 2004, Frank began creating
full-length shows for subscribers to his web site. In 2012, Frank
started producing periodic half-hour shows for KCRW's
"UnFictional" series. He continued to produce all-new
shows for the series until months before his death. Starting in
2003, Frank performed on stage with original material at South
Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa, California, the Art Institute of
Chicago and the Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago, Illinois; at the
Great American Music Hall in San Francisco; and in Los Angeles at
the Hammer Museum and Largo at the Coronet, as well as other
venues. His 230-hour body of work continues to be re-aired on WNYC
New York, and many NPR stations including the radio station at the
University of California at Davis (KDVS), Savannah, Georgia
(WRUU), Cabool, Missouri (KZGM), Carson City, Nevada (KNVC), Cape
May, New Jersey (WCFA), and others with new stations being added.
In early 2005, Frank suffered complete kidney failure. He received
a kidney from his first cousin in 2006, who charged him for it; it
continued to function normally (with the help of multiple
immunosuppressant drugs) until his death. In 2012, Frank returned
to KCRW for episodes of the station's "UnFictional"
program. Frank's radio programs are often dark and ironic and
employ a dry sense of humor and the sincere delivery of ideas or
stories that are patently absurd. Subject matter often includes
religion, life's meaning, death, and Frank's relationships with
women. Frank's voice is distinctive, resonant, authoritative, and,
because of his occasional voice-over work, often oddly familiar.
At the 2003 Third Coast Festival, he explained that he was
recording in Dolby and playing back without it, which created
Joe's now familiar intimate and gritty sound. A 1987 Los Angeles
Times article described it as a voice "like dirty honey"
and "rich as chocolate." The repetitive cadence of the
music, drones and Frank's dry, announcer-like delivery are
sometimes mixed with recorded phone calls with actor/friends such
as Larry Block, Debi Mae West and Arthur Miller (not the
playwright), broken into segments over the course of each
hour-long program. Frank's series "The Other Side"
included excerpts from Buddhist teacher Jack Kornfield's Dharma
talks at Spirit Rock Meditation Center. In an interview on KPFA's
"Morning Show", Kornfield was asked about working with
Frank. Kornfield explained that, although he had never met or
talked to Frank or heard his show, he didn't mind Frank using the
lectures and that many of his meditation students had found
Kornfield through the show.

doctor who worked on the Indonesian island of Sumbawa, believed to
be the assumed secret identity of Adolf Hitler (d. January 15,
1970) is #born in Premissel, Austria-Hungary (now Przemysl,
Poland), the son of Major Josef Poch. He studied medicine at the
University of Graz and received his doctorate in 1921. From 1921
to 1922 he was a secondary doctor in Graz and set up the
children's health service in Salzburg on behalf of the
Commonwealth Fund. From 1924 to 1929 he was in charge of maternal
health care in Salzburg, then in Eisenstadt until 1935. On
December 26, 1924 Georg Poch married the anthropologist Hella
Poch, the widow of his uncle, the anthropologist Rudolf Poch. On
May 29, 1938 he applied for admission to the Nazi Party and was
admitted retrospectively to May 1. From November 1938 to September
1939 he worked in the public health department of the Reich
Ministry of the Interior in Berlin. From 1940 he headed
Sub-Department IIIa (Healthcare and Physical Education) and
Department IIa/2 for "Heritage and Racial Care" at the
Reich Governor of Salzburg. He worked at the hereditary health
court in Salzburg, where he was jointly responsible for measures
to prepare for euthanasia. After the fall of The Third Reich, the
couple was interrogated by the US-CIC in Salzburg. He evaded
Austrian justice by fleeing for many years, first via Bolzano,
Tyrol, Northern Italy, arriving in Indonesia where he remained
from 1954 on. There Georg Poch ran a clinic in Sumbawa Besar after
stations in Dompu and Bima and died of a heart attack in Surabaya
in 1970. Before that, according to Peter Levenda, converted to
Islam, the religion of the Sundanese woman named Sulaesih that he
married while in Indonesia; he said that the though Islam was a
"more manly" religion than Judeo-Christian religiions.
The story of Poch was later documented by Dr. Sosrohusodo before
finally being disseminated to the mass media. Dr. Sosrohusodo
served on the Hope Ship, a ship used by UNICEF to travel to remote
Indonesian islands to innoculate children, which came to visit
Sumbawa Besar. Dr. Sosrohusodo wrote an article in the Pikiran
Rakyat Daily in 1983. In 1994, an article with the same theme
appeared again in. The writer was Enton Supriyatna, a journalist
for Pikiran Rakyat, who as of 2010 was the Executive Editor of
Galamedia. Enton told VIVAnews about his interview with Dr.
Sosrohusodo 16 years ago on Jalan Setiabudi, Bandung. His article
was then published on February 24, 1994. "At that time, he
called Pikiran Rakyat, inviting journalists to his house. When I
met Mr. Sosrohusodo, he was already old," Enton said on
Thursday, February 25, 2010 evening. Sosrohusodo showed him
several photos of Dr. Poch in various poses. "He was tall, at
first glance he did resemble Hitler, from the shape of his anatomy
and head," he said. Enton admitted to being shown a photo of
Poch doing community service, with a white woman -- who looked
like Eva Braun, there was also a photo of Poch with his wife, a
Sundanese woman with the initials 'S' who was last known to live
in Babakan Ciamis. "I gave this last photo to my friend in
Ciamis to be traced. But unfortunately, the photo was not returned
and my friend was difficult to contact," he said. Enton also
admitted to reproducing several photos of Poch, including a photo
of Poch's shorthand -- which according to Sosrohusodo's
investigation was used when Hitler was in power. The photo
reproduction is currently in the possession of Pikiran Rakyat.
"Hopefully it is still stored. I remember when it was
published in Pikiran Rakyat, there was no photo in the article,
because it was published on the opinion page," he added.
Sosrohusodo also told what he knew about Dr. Poch, including why
he suspected the old German doctor was Hitler -- one of which was
Poch's physical characteristics which were similar to what was
revealed in various literature. "Moreover, from the way he
walks, there is indeed a clue that he is indeed Hitler," said
Enton. Sosrohusodo also poured out his feelings to Enton.
Sosrohusodo admitted to being anxious. "Many people thought
he [Sosrohusodo] was crazy, strange, why bother with that,"
Enton said. "He felt anxious, this was something he felt had
to be revealed.... He felt burdened but he was unable to reveal
this himself," he added. As far as Enton knew, Sosrohusodo
had no intention of seeking profit or wanting to be famous. "He
was a simple person, not explosive. If his intention was to seek
profit, the proof is that he didn't get anything, let alone
money," Enton added. According to Enton, Sosrohusodo had
passed away. "He once asked me, if possible, to reveal this,"
Enton added.

Trevor-Roper, English soldier, intelligence officer, author,
historian and academic, polemicist and essayist on a range of
historical topics, but particularly England in the 16th and 17th
centuries and Nazi Germany, Regius Professor of Modern History at
the University of Oxford (d. January 26, 2003) is #born Hugh
Redwald Trevor-Roper in Glanton, Northumberland, England. In the
view of English historian John Philipps Kenyon, "some of
[Hugh Redwald Trevor-Roper, Baron Dacre Of Glanton, FBA
(Fellowship Of The British Academy)'s] short essays have affected
the way we think about the past more than other men's books".
This is echoed by Richard Davenport-Hines and Adam Sisman in the
introduction to One Hundred Letters from Hugh Trevor-Roper (2014):
"The bulk of his publications is formidable ... Some of his
essays are of Victorian length. All of them reduce large subjects
to their essence. Many of them ... have lastingly transformed
their fields." On the other hand, his biographer Adam Sisman
also writes that "the mark of a great historian is that he
writes great books, on the subject which he has made his own. By
this exacting standard Hugh failed." Trevor-Roper's most
commercially successful book was titled The Last Days Of Hitler
(1947). It emerged from his assignment as a British intelligence
officer in 1945 to discover what happened in the last days of
Hitler's bunker. From interviews with a range of witnesses and
study of surviving documents, he demonstrated that Hitler was dead
and had not escaped from Berlin. He also showed that Hitler's
dictatorship was not an efficient unified machine but a
hodge-podge of overlapping rivalries. Trevor-Roper's reputation
was severely damaged in 1983 when he authenticated the Hitler
Diaries shortly before they were shown to be forgeries. Hugh
Trevor-Roper died of cancer in a hospice in Oxford, Oxfordshire,
England, aged 89. His funeral was at Christ Church and was
attended by seven duchesses. His burial details are not publicly
disclosed.

from pneumonia. Jack Teagarden was born Weldon Leo Teagarden in
Vernon, Texas. Teagarden was the preeminent American jazz trombone
player before the bebop era of the 1940s, and one of jazz's best
singers. Teagarden's early career was as a sideman with the likes
of Paul Whiteman and close lifelong friend Louis Armstrong.
Teagarden's trombone style was largely self-taught, and he
developed many unusual alternative positions and novel special
effects on the instrument. He is generally considered the most
innovative jazz trombone stylist of the pre-bebop era. Jazz
clarinetist Pee Wee Russell called him "the best trombone
player in the world". By 1920, Teagarden was playing
professionally in San Antonio, including with the band of pianist
Peck Kelley. In the mid-1920s he started traveling widely around
the United States in a quick succession of different bands. In
1927, he went to New York City where he worked with several bands.
By 1928 he played for the Ben Pollack band. In the late 1920s, he
recorded with such bandleaders and sidemen as Armstrong, Benny
Goodman, Bix Beiderbecke, Red Nichols, Jimmy McPartland, Mezz
Mezzrow, Glenn Miller, Eddie Condon, and Fats Waller. In 1931,
Teagarden's early orchestra recorded the tune "Chances Are"
with Fats Waller playing piano and Jack singing and playing
trombone. Miller and Teagarden collaborated to provide lyrics and
a verse to Spencer Williams' "Basin Street Blues", which
in that amended form became one of the numbers that Teagarden
played until the end of his days. Teagarden sought financial
security during the Great Depression and signed an exclusive
contract to play for the Paul Whiteman Orchestra from 1933 through
1938. In 1946, Teagarden joined Louis Armstrong's All Stars. In
late 1951, Teagarden left to again lead his own band.

Nilsson, American singer-songwriter (b. June 15, 1941) #dies aged
52 in Agoura Hills, California of a heart attack while in the
midst of recording what became his last album, Losst and Founnd
(2019). Harry Edward Nilsson III, known mononymously as Nilsson,
was an American singer-songwriter who achieved the peak of his
commercial success in the early 1970s. His work is characterized
by pioneering vocal overdub experiments, returns to the Great
American Songbook, and fusions of Caribbean sounds. A tenor with a
3 1/2 octave range, Nilsson was one of the few major pop-rock
recording artists of his era to achieve significant commercial
success without ever performing major public concerts or
undertaking regular tours. The craft of his songs and the defiant
attitude he projected remains a touchstone for later generations
of indie rock musicians. Born in Brooklyn, Nilsson moved to Los
Angeles as a teenager to escape his family's poor financial
situation. While working as a computer programmer at a bank, he
grew interested in musical composition and close-harmony singing,
and was successful in having some of his songs recorded by various
artists such as the Monkees. In 1967, he debuted on RCA Victor
with the LP Pandemonium Shadow Show, followed by a variety of
releases that include a collaboration with Randy Newman (Nilsson
Sings Newman, 1970) and the original children's story The Point!
(1971). His most commercially successful album, Nilsson Schmilsson
(1971), produced the international top 10 singles "Without
You" and "Coconut". His other top 10 hit,
"Everybody's Talkin'" (1968), was a prominent song in
the 1969 film Midnight Cowboy. A version of Nilsson's "One",
released by Three Dog Night in 1969, also reached the U.S. top 10.
During a 1968 press conference, the Beatles were asked what their
favorite American group was and answered "Nilsson". He
soon formed close friendships with John Lennon and Ringo Starr. In
the 1970s, Nilsson and Lennon joined Starr as members of the
Hollywood Vampires drinking club, embroiling themselves in a
number of widely publicized, alcohol-fueled incidents. At the same
time, they produced one collaborative album, Pussy Cats (1974).
After 1977, Nilsson left RCA, and his record output diminished. In
response to Lennon's 1980 murder, he took a hiatus from the music
industry to campaign for gun control. For the rest of his life, he
recorded only sporadically. Nilsson created the first remix album
(Aerial Pandemonium Ballet, 1971) and recorded the first mashup
song ("You Can't Do That", 1967). He was voted No. 62 in
Rolling Stone's 2015 list of the "100 Greatest Songwriters of
All Time", where he was described as "a pioneer of the
Los Angeles studio sound, a crucial bridge between the baroque
psychedelic pop of the late Sixties and the more personal
singer-songwriter era of the Seventies". The RIAA certified
Nilsson Schmilsson and Son of Schmilsson as gold records,
indicating over 500,000 units sold each. His honors include Grammy
Awards for two of his recordings; Best Contemporary Vocal
Performance, Male in 1970 for "Everybody's Talkin'" and
Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male in 1973 for "Without You".

Today, January 15, 2026
January 15, 1983: #DOTD: Meyer Lansky,
American gangster known as the "Mob's Accountant", major
organized crime figure who, along with his associate Charles
"Lucky" Luciano, was instrumental in the development of
the National Crime Syndicate in the United States (b. July 4,
1902) #dies of lung cancer aged 80 in Miami where he spent his
last years quietly in retirement at his home in Miami Beach,
Florida, leaving a widow and three children. On paper, Lansky was
worth almost nothing. Before he fled Cuba in the aftermath of the
Cuban Revolution, Lansky was said to be worth an estimated 20M USD
(equivalent to 166M USD in 2021); when he died in 1983, his family
learned that his estate was only worth around 57K USD (equivalent
to 167,477 USD in 2022) -- despite this, the FBI believed he left
behind over 300M USD (744M USD in 2022) in hidden bank accounts,
but they never found any money. This would be equivalent to 744M
USD in 2022. Meyer Lansky was born Maier Suchowljansky in Grodno,
Russian Empire (now Belarus), to a Polish-Jewish family who
experienced antisemitism and pogroms from Imperial authorities.
When asked about his native country, Lansky always responded
"Poland". In 1911, Lansky emigrated at age nine to the
United States through the port of Odessa (now in Ukraine) with his
mother and brother Jacob, and joined his father, who had
immigrated in 1909, and settled on the Lower East Side of
Manhattan, New York. Lansky met Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel
when they were children. They became lifelong friends, as well as
partners in the bootlegging trade, and together managed the Bugs
and Meyer Mob, with its reputation as one of the most violent
Prohibition gangs. Lansky was also close friends with Charles
"Lucky" Luciano; the two met as teenagers when Luciano
attempted to extort Lansky for protection money on his walk home
from school. Luciano respected the younger boy's defiant responses
to his threats, and the two formed a lasting partnership
thereafter. The two of them would go on to associate with veteran
gangster Arnold Rothstein, up until his murder in 1928. A member
of the Jewish mob, Lansky developed a gambling empire that
stretched across the world. He was said to own points
(percentages) in casinos in Las Vegas, Cuba, The Bahamas and
London. Although a member of the Jewish Mob, Lansky undoubtedly
had strong influence with the Italian-American Mafia and played a
large role in the consolidation of the criminal underworld. The
full extent of this role has been the subject of some debate, as
Lansky himself denied many of the accusations against him. In the
1930s, Lansky and his gang stepped outside their usual criminal
activities to break up rallies held by the pro-Nazi
German-American Bund. He recalled a particular rally in Yorkville,
a German neighborhood in Manhattan, that he and fourteen other
associates disrupted: "The stage was decorated with a
swastika and a picture of Adolf Hitler. The speakers started
ranting. There were only fifteen of us, but we went into action.
We threw some of them out the windows. Most of the Nazis panicked
and ran out. We chased them and beat them up. We wanted to show
them that Jews would not always sit back and accept insults".
During World War II, Lansky was also instrumental in helping the
Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI)'s Operation Underworld, in
which the government recruited criminals to watch out for German
infiltrators and submarine-borne saboteurs. Lansky helped arrange
a deal with the government via a high-ranking United States Navy
official. This deal secured the release of Luciano from prison; in
exchange, the Mafia would provide security for the warships that
were being built along the docks in New York Harbor. German
submarines were sinking Allied ships in great numbers along the
eastern seaboard and the Caribbean coast, and there was great fear
of attack or sabotage by Nazi sympathizers. Lansky connected the
ONI with Luciano, who reportedly instructed Joseph Lanza to
prevent sabotage on the New York waterfront. Lansky is credited
with having "controlled" compromising pictures of a
sexual nature featuring former FBI director, J. Edgar Hoover with
his longtime aide, Clyde Tolson. In his book, Official and
Confidential: The Secret Life of J. Edgar Hoover, biographer
Anthony Summers cites multiple primary sources regarding Lansky's
use of blackmail to gain influence with politicians, policemen and
judges. One such stage for the acquisition of blackmail materials
were orgies held by late attorney and Lansky protege, Roy Cohn,
and liquor magnate, Lewis Rosenstiel, who had lasting ties with
the Mafia from his bootleg operations during Prohibition. The
release of FBI files on Lansky revealed extensive monitoring and
investigation, which makes it harder to explain why Lansky was not
pursued to conviction, unless he successfully evaded it by
blackmail. Cohn copied this model of blackmail to control
politicians and evade conviction himself. Despite nearly 50 years
as a member/participant in organized crime, Lansky was never found
guilty of anything more serious than illegal gambling. He has a
legacy of being one of the most financially successful gangsters
in American history.

Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht, two of the most prominent
socialists in Germany, are tortured and murdered in Berlin by
members of The Freikorps' Guard Cavalry Rifle Division at the end
of the Spartacist Uprising after they had consulted with Gustav
Noske, who was a member of the Council of the People's Deputies,
Germany's interim government, and had responsibility for military
affairs. Although two of the men directly involved in the murders
were prosecuted, no one responsible for ordering their deaths was
ever brought to trial. Luxemburg's body was thrown in the Landwehr
Canal in Berlin. Both Luxemburg and Liebknecht are buried at the
Friedrichsfelde Central Cemetery in Friedrichsfelde, Lichtenberg,
Berlin, Germany. ========= Rosa Luxemburg, Jewish Polish-Russian
Marxist theorist, feminist, philosopher, economist, Marxist
theorist, anti-war activist, and revolutionary socialist who
became a naturalized German citizen at the age of 28, a member of
the Social Democracy of the Kingdom Of Poland and Lithuania
(SDKPiL), the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), the
Independent Social Democratic Party (USPD), and the Communist
Party of Germany (KPD) (b. March 5, 1871) was born Rozalia
Luksenburg in Zamosc, Congress Poland, Russian Empire. During The
German Revolution Of 1918-1919, also known as the November
Revolution, she co-founded the newspaper Die Rote Fahne ("The
Red Flag"), the central organ of the Spartacist movement.
Luxemburg considered the Spartacist uprising of January 1919 a
blunder, but supported it as events unfolded. Due to her pointed
criticism of both the Leninist and the more moderate social
democratic schools of socialism, Luxemburg has had a somewhat
ambivalent reception among scholars and theorists of the political
left. ========= Karl Liebknecht, German revolutionary socialist
and anti-militarist who opposed in the Reichstag Germany's
involvement in World War I, member of the Social Democratic Party
of Germany (SPD) beginning in 1900, one of its deputies in the
Reichstag from 1912 to 1916, where he represented the
left-revolutionary wing of the party (b. August 13, 1871) was born
Karl Paul August Friedrich Liebknecht in Leipzig, Kingdom of
Saxony, German Empire (modern Germany). In 1916 he was expelled
from the SPD's parliamentary group for his opposition to the
Burgfriedenspolitik, the political truce between all parties in
the Reichstag while the war lasted. He twice spent time in prison,
first for writing an anti-militarism pamphlet in 1907 and then for
his role in a 1916 antiwar demonstration. He was released from the
second under a general amnesty three weeks before the end of the
First World War. During the November Revolution that broke out
across Germany in the final days of the war, Liebknecht proclaimed
Germany a "Free Socialist Republic" from the Berlin
Palace on November 9, 1918. In December, his call to make Germany
a soviet republic was rejected by the majority of the Reich
Congress of Workers' and Soldiers' Councils (Reichsratekongress).
At the end of 1918, Liebknecht was one of the founders of the
Communist Party of Germany (KPD). He had a leading role in
Spartacist uprising. ========= The Spartacus League (German:
Spartakusbund) was a Marxist revolutionary movement founded in
August 1914 as the International Group by Rosa Luxemburg, Karl
Liebknecht, Clara Zetkin, and other members of the Social
Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) who were dissatisfied with the
party's official policies in support of the war. In 1916 it
renamed itself the Spartacus Group and in 1917 joined the
Independent Social Democratic Party of Germany (USPD), which had
split off from the SPD as its left wing faction. During the
November Revolution of 1918 that broke out across Germany at the
end of the war, the Spartacus Group re-established itself as a
nationwide, non-party organization called the "Spartacus
League" with the goal of instituting a council republic that
would include all of Germany. It became part of the Communist
Party of Germany (KPD) when it was formed on January 1, 1919 and
at that point ceased to exist as a separate entity. The League's
name referred to Spartacus, the leader of a major slave uprising
against the Roman Republic (73-71 BCE). For the Spartacists, his
name symbolized the ongoing resistance of the oppressed against
their exploiters and thus expressed the Marxist view of historical
materialism, according to which history is driven by class
struggles. ========= The European Civil War: World War I: The
First European War (The European Theater Of World War I): The
Aftermath Of World War I: 20th Century Revolutions: The
Revolutions Of 1917-1923: The Spartacist Uprising (German:
Spartakusaufstand) (The January Uprising [Januaraufstand], Bloody
Week): -- The Spartacist Uprising was an armed uprising that took
place in Berlin from January 5-12, 1919. It occurred in connection
with the German revolution that broke out just before the end of
World War I. The uprising was primarily a power struggle between
the supporters of the provisional government led by Friedrich
Ebert of the Majority Social Democratic Party of Germany (MSPD),
which favored a social democracy, and those who backed the
position of the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) led by Karl
Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg, which wanted to set up a council
republic similar to the one established by the Bolsheviks in
Russia. The government's forces were victorious in the fighting.
The uprising began with mass demonstrations and strikes called by
the parties of the radical left to protest the dismissal of
Berlin's chief of police. Taken by surprise at the size of the
turnout and the protestors' spontaneous occupation of newspaper
buildings and printing companies, the leaders of the left were
unable to agree on how to proceed. As a result, the uprising
remained largely without direction. The government responded with
military force, including several paramilitary Freikorps units,
retook the buildings that had been occupied and violently
suppressed the uprising. The death toll was roughly 150-200,
mostly among the insurgents. The most prominent deaths were those
of Liebknecht and Luxemburg, who were executed extrajudicially on
January 15, almost certainly with the at least tacit approval of
the MSPD-led government. The party's involvement hampered its
position throughout the life of the Weimar Republic, although
quashing the uprising allowed elections for the National Assembly
to take place as scheduled on January 19, 1919. The Assembly went
on to write the Weimar Constitution that created the first
national German democracy. The uprising took its popular name from
the Marxist Spartacus League (Spartakusbund), which Luxemburg and
Liebknecht founded in 1914. When the KPD was established on
January 1, 1919, the Spartacus League became part of it. Some
historians, such as Heinrich August Winkler and Sebastian Haffner,
consider the name to be misleading because the Spartacists (KPD)
had not wanted, planned or led the revolt. ========= In 1915,
after the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) supported
German involvement in World War I, Luxemburg and Liebknecht
co-founded The Spartacus League, which eventually became the KPD,
and the Communist Party of Germany whose sprung from it. On
November 11, 1918, Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht together
with others founded the Spartacist League. Friedrich Ebert's
majority Social Democratic government crushed the revolt and the
Spartakusbund by sending in the Freikorps (government-sponsored
paramilitary groups consisting mostly of World War I veterans).
Freikorps troops captured and murdered Luxemburg and Liebknecht.
After their deaths, Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg became
martyrs for Socialists. They were extensively idolized as
communist martyrs by the East German communist regime. The German
Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution notes that
idolization of Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebnecht is an important
tradition of German far-left extremism. =========

Joke, Son! (1947) Kenny Delmar As Senator Claghorn MP4 Or DVD

January 15, 1947: Aesthetics: Performing
Arts: Premieres: Film Premieres: American Film Premieres: -- It's
A Joke, Son!, a 1947 American comedy film directed by Benjamin
Stoloff (in his final directorial role in a film) featuring
distinguished radio comedian Kenny Delmar as Senator Beauregard
Claghorn, a character on Fred Allen's radio program and later the
inspiration for the cartoon character Foghorn Leghorn, is
released. The film was the first American production of Eagle-Lion
Films and was produced with 650,000 USD, a very small budget
compared to other Hollywood films at the time. Based on Delmore's
popularity as "Unquestionably The Most Quoted Man In The
Nation", the film was expected to be a big hit; instead, it
was a box-office disappointment, with one theater chain removing
the film from theaters after less than a week after it only drew
1K USD in ticket sales. The film contributed to a
multimillion-dollar loss for Eagle-Lion in 1947, and the chairman
of Eagle-Lion Films, Arthur B. Krim. later stated that the studio
had overpaid for Delmar and overestimated his bankability. Despite
this, the film gained a following in later years, and is duly
regarded as what it is -- a very funny film with Kenny Delmar at
his funniest!

Elizabeth Tudor, daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, is
crowned as Elizabeth I Of England in Westminster Abbey. Queen
Elizabeth I (b. September 7, 1533), Queen Of England and Ireland
from 17 November 1558 until her death (d. 1603) was born in the
Palace of Placentia. also known as Greenwich Palace. Elizabeth I
was sometimes called The Virgin Queen, Gloriana or Good Queen
Bess. Though some have suggested that she was the mother of Edward
de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford, who was a favorite in Elizabeth'
court and who those who subscribe to the Oxfordian theory of
Shakespearean authorship believe was the true identity of William
Shakespeare. Whether she was or was not his mother, history
officially records that Elizabeth was childless, and thereby was
the last monarch of the House of Tudor. She was the daughter of
King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. She ascended the throne in 1558
at age 25. During her reign, Britain became a world power by
defeating the Spanish Armada. The Anglican Church was also fully
established.

various hit films of the 1960s formed the basis of her
international reputation, and an obituary in The Telegraph

china-white skin and cupid lips who epitomised the sensuality of
the swinging Sixties". Politically, she was left-wing, and
publicly supported Mordechai Vanunu, the Israeli dissident who
revealed Israel's nuclear weapons programme. While performing The
Loves of Shakespeare's Women at the Cameri Theatre in Tel Aviv in
June 2007, York dedicated the performance to Vanunu, evoking both
cheers and jeers from the audience.
